COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTS

Zambia takes its name from the mighty Zambezi River, which flows along the southern border. Zambia is a thinly populated country, sharing the spectacular Victoria Falls with neighboring Zimbabwe. A large percentage of its land is wildlife reserves with open unspoiled woodland and floodplains attracting large numbers of wildlife. For a taste of the real old-fashioned safari experience enjoy a walking safari in Zambia. Accommodations are small, charming and rustic. The South Luangwa covers some 5,000 square miles and is a haven rich in wildlife and bird species. Experience Zambia much the same way David Livingstone did - take a walking safari using remote bush camps, old-fashioned portered safaris, mobile tented safaris or a canoe safari.

VICTORIA FALLS - Discovered by David Livingstone in 1855, the Victoria Falls were named after Queen Victoria. Known as "The Smoke that Thunders", due to the falling water that sends spray clouds high into the air, the falls are one of the seven natural wonders in the world and also the largest and perhaps most beautiful. Here the Zambezi River is over a mile wide and plunges into a vertical abyss across its entire width.

UPPER ZAMBEZI - Canoeing on the Upper Zambezi River has become an extremely popular activity. The river above the Falls boasts varied fauna and flora with picturesque islands, narrow channels and a few white water rapids. Upper Zambezi Canoe Safaris are operated on the 70km stretch of the Zambezi River between Katambora and Victoria Falls. Katambora is approximately 10km down river from the Botswana border where the Zambezi enters Zimbabwe and runs alongside the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia and the Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe. The Upper Zambezi River is not controlled by a dam and therefore the water level is subject to seasonal variation. Floods begin in December and normally peak in April/May. The Upper Zambezi has numerous islands that are dissected by channels.

LOWER ZAMBEZI - Lower Zambezi National Park has an abundance of game and is relatively unexplored. The Lower Zambezi is best during the dry season from May to October. For game, the best time is the really hot months of October and November - temperatures however can be extremely uncomfortable. The rains generally start from mid November to the end of March.

The Lower Zambezi River
can be divided into three main canoeing sections:
• Kariba to Chirundu.
• Chirundu to Mana Pools. The most popular stretch on the lower Zambezi River.
• Mana Pools to Kanyemba on the Mozambican border.

SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK - South Luangwa National Park offers unique walking safaris into the heart of the bushveld and is well known for its excellent leopard sightings. On a walking trail you will be fascinated and enlightened by the rangers in-depth knowledge of conservation and ecology. Your naturalist ranger will point out the many fascinating secrets of the bush which in a vehicle you may not have come across.

NORTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK - This remote tract of land covering 4636 square kilometres offers one of the finest wilderness experiences in Zambia, if not Africa itself. It is not open to the public and there are no permanent lodges there. Access is with one of the few safari operators granted permission to conduct walking safaris there. The beauty of visiting this park is the truly remarkable opportunities to experience Africa as it was. It is wild and untouched and you are simply an unobtrusive witness to its natural beauty and drama.
