Kenya Unveiled with Leora & Charlene

Recently, Leora Rothschild and Travel Designer, Charlene, went on a captivating journey through the iconic Masai Mara, uncovering hidden treasures and revisiting beloved classics, each moment enriching our finely crafted itineraries. 

The Masai Mara Plains 

Loirien Mara sits just above the Mara Triangle. Coming from Tanzania, 2 short flights and a lively bus ride through the bustling border town, we arrived at Loirien Mara, perched elegantly above the sweeping Mara plains. Our villa, a beautifully designed three-bedroom sanctuary, offered a private chef, dedicated masseurs, and indulgent spa facilities including a steam room and sauna. Mornings were filled with the anticipation of wildlife encounters on the Mara floor, while afternoons unfolded slowly, spent by the tranquil pool or from one of the villa’s serene verandas. Every corner offered panoramic views, transforming each moment into a peaceful celebration of Kenya’s untamed beauty, an idyllic setting for families or friends seeking refined intimacy. 

Elevated Moments 

The journey continued to 1,000 feet (304 meters) above the plains to Angama Mara, a property that feels suspended in the clouds, yet deeply rooted in the spirit of the Mara. We enjoyed connecting with local Maasai women through the delicate artistry of beadwork in their workshop. On our way from the room to dinner, we encountered zebras quietly grazing along the winding pathways, a gentle reminder that here, nature is ever-present. Shared meals with fellow travelers offered moments of connection among kindred spirits drawn to Africa's timeless beauty. 

Into the Heart of the Wild

Descending from the heights, our journey took us deeper into the Mara’s wilderness, where we arrived at the welcoming spirit of Richard's River Camp. This intimate retreat, beloved by many Rothschild travelers, exudes authenticity. Their spacious, elegantly appointed tents offered the simple yet luxurious pleasure of outdoor showers beneath star-filled skies. Meals were exceptional, infused with local flavors and accompanied by the rich stories of our guide, whose roots in the nearby village infused every game drive with deep local knowledge. During our time here, we enjoyed remarkable sightings of a leopard and a pride of lions, moments that unfolded naturally in the wild and left a lasting impression of the Mara’s raw beauty. 

The Wild Beauty of the Mara 

The Masai Mara, even in quieter seasons, never loses its magic. We lingered for over an hour, captivated by a mother leopard and her playful cub sharing tender, instinctive moments. Nearby, we observed the tense interactions around a lion's zebra kill, as jackals and vultures cautiously approached, each attempting to claim their share. These scenes, unfiltered, spontaneous, and deeply moving, are reminders that true safaris are not about rushing from sighting to sighting, but about embracing the authentic rhythm of the wild. 

A Secluded Retreat 

We continued to Mara Toto Camp, welcomed to this secluded haven designed by conservationists Derek and Beverly Joubert. Nestled amid the trees with only four tented suites, the camp offered an atmosphere of refined seclusion. Dining beneath a cathedral of branches, surrounded by the playful chatter of monkeys and the melodic calls of birds, infused each meal with whimsy. At night, the deep grunts of hippos along the river below serenaded us to sleep. The impeccable service, coupled with an expert guide whose deep reverence for the Mara shone through each outing, made Mara Toto an unforgettable chapter of our journey. 

The Soulful Calm in the heart of the Mara 

A very special part of our journey through East Africa was our time at Ishara Mara. Among the first to experience the newly redesigned camp, and what a transformation it had undergone. Ishara's philosophy in the rebuild was to take everything guests had wished for in the past and bring it to life, and they certainly succeeded. Here, mornings can be spent out on the Mara reserve plains, abundant with wildlife encounters. If you choose not to head out in the afternoons, there is much to enjoy at camp, especially the Nordic spa, complete with hot and cold plunge pools, sauna rooms, and an incredible wellness spa. Alternatively, relaxing on the deck overlooking the scenic Mara River offers a perfect moment of serenity. When night fell, we were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the bush, with only a netted screen between us and the wildlife that roamed freely, a surreal and luxurious experience we will never forget. 

A Toast to the Mara 

Every Rothschild journey concludes with moments that linger in the heart long after the adventure ends. Sundowners in the Mara, where the sun slips below the golden horizon and the sky blushes in soft hues, offered Leora and Charlene a chance to reflect on a journey experienced with true intention and heart.
