Why Botswana?

Botswana is a haven of untamed beauty, abundant wildlife, and exclusive safari adventures for those wanting to immerse in the wilderness. Renowned as one of the world’s premier luxury safari destinations, it’s home to the awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Okavango Delta—a vast inland wetland brimming with diverse wildlife. Seamlessly blending raw natural splendor with refined elegance, Botswana offers the perfect escape for those seeking both adventure and indulgence.

Experiences

Botswana offers unique safari adventures, with the rare opportunity to explore its landscapes by both land and water while staying in exquisite lodges and beautiful tented camps. Completely immersed in the raw beauty of unspoiled wilderness and its incredible wildlife.

The Moremi Game Reserve, a jewel of the Okavango Delta, often takes center stage on a Botswana safari. Known for exceptional wildlife encounters and stunning lodges set within a network of shimmering waterways, it’s a destination that captivates every visitor.

Venture further into the mesmerizing expanse of the Kalahari Desert, a breathtaking arid wilderness spanning 350,000 square miles. Spend an evening under a canopy of stars beside ancient baobab trees or explore the vast Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the world’s largest salt flats. This unique ecosystem supports migrating wildebeest, greater flamingos, and Africa’s largest zebra population. As night falls, the eerie calls of brown hyenas echo through the darkness, while mornings bring the delightful sight of meerkats basking in the sun before setting out to forage.

Places To Visit

For many, a luxury Botswana safari means the Okavango Delta. Indeed, this fascinating estuarine region offers more than enough stunning scenery and copious nature to justify its status as a Botswana safari’s primary drawcard. There is, however, so much more to this remarkable country, with vast salt pans, expansive grasslands, the Kalahari Desert and remarkable local cultures.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Towards the end of the rainy season, when pools have filled and foliage is rich, the salt pans of Makgadikgadi National Park are abundant with life. Wildebeest, pelicans, kudu, giraffe, springbok and one of Africa’s largest zebra populations fill the region, and of course, the predators that continually shadow them in their migrations. Best experienced on a luxury Botswana fly camp, a night on the plains in the barren dry season is like camping on a different planet. The pans are also home to majestic baobab trees, their rotund trunks swollen with water that can sustain them through even the harshest of droughts.

The San Bushlands

The fascinating San peoples are among the oldest cultures in the world, likely descendants of the first inhabitants of Botswana, with artefacts discovered dating back some 45,000 years. The egalitarian hunter-gatherer culture has afforded the San an exceptional knowledge of their somewhat inhospitable homeland, wisdom frequently shared with guests and visitors. The Tsodilo Hills offer a glimpse back in time, the site of numerous archeological finds and impeccable, ancient cave art.

Chobe National Park

Chobe encapsulates the iconic luxury Botswana safari experience. Numerous luxury camps are dispersed throughout the park, with the Chobe River on its northern border attracting vast herds of herbivore, wildfowl and larger game. Chobe entertains some of the most accessible elephant colonies in Africa, and is one of the best destinations to witness the Big Five; lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

The Okavango Delta

Understandably considered Botswana’s foremost attraction, the magical Okavango Delta is the nation’s thriving heart. Home to a wealth of nature, including elephant, hippo, big cats and migratory waterfowl, it is a dream destination for wildlife photographers. Spectacular, unique luxury villas and camps nestle upon the water’s edge and the sounds of nature immerse you day and night. Few things can surpass silently plying the waters of the delta in a mokoro, or hand-carved timber canoe, to view animals from a wonderfully tranquil, uniquely Motswana perspective.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Best visited shortly after the rainy season, the expansive grasslands are one of the finest exhibitions of the circle of life. Newborn herbivores are corralled by their protective herds, prowling carnivores or on constant vigil, ready to pounce upon unattentive stragglers and the abundance of nature is simply staggering.

Accommodation

Botswana is celebrated for its exquisite collection of luxury safari camps and lodges, offering something for every traveler. Whether you dream of an authentic camp under canvas or prefer the convenience of an established lodge, the choices are as abundant as they are diverse.

Many camps strike the perfect balance for those seeking a blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. Their thatched and fabric tents evoke the elegance of early colonial safaris while ensuring every modern luxury is at your fingertips.

Families will appreciate camps designed with family rooms, ensuring space and comfort for everyone. Couples on a honeymoon or marking a special occasion will find solace in smaller, more intimate camps that exude romance.

For the adventurous spirit, nothing compares to spending a night under the stars on the open salt pans of the Makgadikgadi—a truly unforgettable experience that connects you to Botswana's raw and otherworldly beauty.
