Why Tanzania?

Witness the awe-inspiring Great Migration wildebeest thunder across the Serengeti. Immerse yourself in a rich cultural journey, meeting the red-robed Maasai and the Hadzabe and Datoga hunter-gatherers living in harmony with the land. The Serengeti, renowned worldwide, brims with predators and plains game, offering unparalleled wildlife encounters. For a more intimate, off-the-beaten-path adventure, venture to Southern Tanzania’s lesser-known game parks.

Experiences

Tanzania offers a rich blend of incredible wildlife encounters and deep cultural immersion. Over 100 ethnic groups call it home. Join local conservationists and anti-poaching units to see firsthand how they protect wildlife habitats and combat poaching.

Experience vibrant culture through educational community visits, from the iconic, red-robbed Maasai to the Hadzabe and Datoga Bushmen, who live closely with nature. The Great Migration, one of the world's most spectacular wildlife events, unfolds annually across Tanzania's Serengeti plains.

Whether on traditional game drives or intimate walking safaris, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy wildlife in their natural habitats up close. In contrast, a hot air balloon safari gives you a unique aerial perspective of the great migration from above and breathtaking landscapes.

Places To Visit

Tanzania is considered the jewel of East Africa. From expansive plains to Mount Kilimanjaro to the idyllic crystal-clear shores of Zanzibar, each destination in Tanzania invites you to explore this country's stunning and diverse beauty.

Tanzania Changing Light within the Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater

Some 2,000 feet (610m) from summit to floor, this long-extinct volcanic crater is a hidden world of unspoiled nature. Though capable of scaling its walls, many animals choose to remain within this wonderfully balanced ecosystem, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, flamingos, zebras, and antelopes.

Tanzania Zanzibar s Azure Waters

Zanzibar

Previously named the Spice Islands, the archipelago that makes up Zanzibar is as exotic as it is serene. Comprising over 40 individual islands, the largest of which offer a wide range of luxury accommodations. Some of the smaller islands, such as Mnemba, offer complete exclusivity and a wonderfully romantic retreat.

Serengeti National Park

Stretching 5,700 square miles (14,763 square km) of grasslands, the famed Serengeti National Park is one of Africa's most abundant wildlife habitats. Hosting the Great Migration for at least nine months of the year is a wondrous spectacle. No matter when or where you visit, you will surely experience plentiful wildlife encounters rivaling any given nature documentary.

Tarangire National Park

Home to the densest population of elephants in Africa, Tarangire is a vastly different facet of Tanzania. The elephant herds are found alongside cheetahs, African wild dogs, kudu, oryx, and more. A visit just after the rainy season is often the best time to witness the birth of elephant calves and their adorable first few weeks of life with oversized ears and trunks.

Tanzania Mahale Mountains Chimp Trekking

Mahale National Park

Mahale National Park is most famed for its colony of over 1,000 chimpanzees on the forested slopes of the Mahale mountain range. Though famous primatologist and chimp expert, Jane Goodall, performed most of her studies in the far smaller Gombe National Park to the north, Mahale offers an equally thrilling opportunity to see mankind’s closest living relatives in their natural surroundings.

Ruaha National Park

From expansive savannahs and vibrant acacia woodlands to dry riverbeds dotted with palm trees, rich red soil, and the iconic silhouette of baobab trees. The area is a haven for wildlife, offering an incredible opportunity to see predators in action, including leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, lions. The lions here are known for their extraordinary hunting skills, often targeting large prey such as giraffes and buffalo. Additionally, the park is home to vast herds of buffalo and elephants, along with over 570 species of birds. Enjoy game drives, night safaris, walking tours, and even fly camping for a truly unique experience.

Aerial view of Nyerere national Park in Tanzania

Nyerere National Park

The landscape here is diverse, featuring expansive plains, lush woodlands, rugged rock formations, and a network of lakes, lagoons, and tributaries created by the Rufiji River. Nyerere National Park is home to a significant portion of the world’s wild dog population, as well as one of Africa’s largest giraffe populations. The Rufiji River is a prime spot for game viewing, in the dry season, when large herds of animals gather at the river to drink, alongside hippos and crocodiles basking at the water's edge.

Mount Kil

Mount Kilimanjaro

At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak, standing proudly on the equator. While the climate remains relatively consistent year-round, it shifts with altitude, showcasing nearly every climate zone found on Earth. Climbing Kili is a top adventure for thrill-seekers, but it’s not an easy feat—this 7-10 day journey is challenging, with about half of climbers unable to reach the summit. There are various routes and durations to choose from, and as with any high-altitude trek, giving your body more time to acclimatize greatly increases your chances of success.

Katavi National Park

As one of East Africa’s most untouched and remote destinations, Katavi offers some of the best game viewing in a region that sees few visitors. Ideal for seasoned safari travelers and adventurers, Katavi is more difficult and costly to reach, ensuring an exclusive experience. The dry season brings intense game viewing, with large herds of buffalo, massive hippo pods crowding shrinking waterholes, and enormous crocodiles. The park is also home to substantial populations of elephant, buffalo, lion, and spotted hyena. Enjoy traditional game drives, night safaris, walking safaris, and fly camping for a truly immersive experience.

Accommodation

In the Serengeti, accommodation ranges from mobile camps that follow the migration herds to permanent luxury tented safari camps and lodges. Several lodges can also accommodate a private small group or multi-generational family groups.  On the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, you'll find a range of options, from larger hotels to tented camps and ultra-luxurious boutique lodges with dramatic views into the crater. In the Highlands, you find lovely boutique hotels set on coffee plantations.

Tarangire National Park has the option to stay in traditional tented camps inside the park or more exclusive private luxury lodges on the borders of the park. Southern Tanzania’s parks feature remote camps of all styles, including the unique experience of spending the night under the stars on the banks of a crocodile-infested river.
